Heavy Rainfall Causes Flooding Across Northern Bulgaria

Veliko Tarnovo, January 4, 2026 — Several towns in northern Bulgaria were affected by flooding overnight after continuous heavy rainfall caused rivers to overflow and drainage systems to fail.

Local authorities reported that water levels rose rapidly late Sunday evening, forcing emergency teams to respond to multiple incidents involving trapped vehicles and flooded residential areas.

Emergency Response

Firefighters and civil protection units were deployed shortly after midnight. In some villages, residents were temporarily evacuated as a precaution.

“We have not seen rainfall of this intensity in years,” said a spokesperson for the regional emergency services. “Our priority is ensuring the safety of residents and preventing further damage.”

Infrastructure Impact

Multiple roads were closed due to landslides and water damage. Power outages were reported in several districts after substations were affected by the flooding.

Municipal officials urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and to follow official announcements throughout the day.

Weather Forecast

Meteorologists expect the rain to gradually weaken over the next 24 hours, though additional showers remain possible. Authorities warned that rivers may remain at high levels even after rainfall subsides.

Community Support

Volunteers and local organizations have begun collecting supplies, including drinking water, food, and clothing, for affected families.

Residents experiencing emergencies are advised to contact local authorities or emergency services immediately.
